Step 1: Plan Your Layout
The first thing you need to do is to plan your backsplash layout. This involves measuring the area you want to tile, choosing your tiles, and deciding on the pattern or design. Take note of where your outlets are located and mark them on the wall. This will help you visualize how the tiles will look around them and avoid awkward cuts or misalignments.
Step 2: Turn Off the Power
Before you start tiling around the outlets, you must turn off the power to avoid any electrical hazards. Locate the circuit breaker that controls the outlet and switch it off. Test the outlet with a voltage tester to make sure there’s no current running through it.
Step 3: Remove the Outlet Cover

Using a notched trowel, apply the adhesive to the wall in a thin, even layer. Start from the bottom and work your way up, making sure the adhesive covers the entire area where the tiles will go. Don’t apply too much adhesive at once, as it can dry out before you have a chance to place the tiles.
Step 6: Place the Tiles
Place the tiles on the adhesive, starting from the bottom and working your way up. Use tile spacers to create even gaps between the tiles and ensure a uniform look. Pay attention to the outlet area and make sure the tiles fit neatly around it. Use a level to check that the tiles are straight and adjust them if necessary.
Step 7: Cut and Place the Outlet Trim
Once the tiles are in place, it’s time to cut and place the outlet trim. This is a small piece of metal or plastic that covers the gap between the tile and the outlet, creating a smooth and flush finish. Measure the size of the trim and cut it to fit using scissors or a utility knife. Apply a small amount of adhesive to the back of the trim and press it firmly onto the wall, covering the edges of the tiles around the outlet.
Step 8: Grout the Tiles
After the adhesive has dried completely, it’s time to grout the tiles. Mix the grout according to the instructions on the package and apply it to the tiles using a rubber float. Work the grout into the gaps between the tiles, making sure there are no air pockets or gaps. Wipe off the excess grout with a damp sponge, being careful not to remove too much or damage the tiles.
Step 9: Reattach the Outlet Cover
Once the grout has dried, you can reattach the outlet cover using the screws you removed earlier. Make sure the cover is flush with the wall and doesn’t interfere with the trim or the tiles. Turn the power back on and test the outlet to make sure it’s working properly.
